Welcome to Richard's Dinner

Because no one should be alone at Christmas

About Us

Richard's Dinner is an annual event held on Christmas Day in Martinsville, Virginia. Richard's Dinner provides free meals to local residents so no one will ever be alone for a Christmas dinner. Meals are prepared by volunteers, many of whom spend the entire night on Christmas Eve cooking. Meals are available for delivery, for pick-up, or for dining in at First Baptist Church of Martinsville.

Richard's Dinner is named after Richard Sarver, a long-time local caterer dedicated to service to his community. In 1985, he started the tradition with the first Christmas dinner. After he passed away in 2011, the annual event was named in his memory. It has grown through the years to the point that we now serve around 2,500 to 3,000 people each Christmas Day.

Volunteering

We couldn't do this without our volunteers. We need people to help each year. If you'd like to help, you can call (276) 732-3422. We need volunteers for:

  • Cooking on Christmas Eve
  • Preparing desserts and delivering them to the facility
  • Assembling meals
  • Delivering meals between 10 AM and 2 PM on Christmas Day
  • Cleanup afterward (leftovers included!)

Richard's Dinner is funded entirely by private donations through the Grace Network. To donate, call (276) 638-8500.
